House Groups

There are a number of House Groups with varied programmes which meet about fortnightly in peoples' homes and follow their own particular pattern. Study Programmes, Bible study, Prayer all feature in these more intimate groups. They are good ways of getting to know people in a very informal setting - as well as developing your faith.

  • Monday Night Fellowship

This is a group for 20 & 30 somethings that meets weekly for Bible studies & socials (on a Monday, funnily enough). We are always happy to welcome new members, where ever they live. Please watch the weekly Church Notices or the What's on at Wesley page for details. For further information please contact David Thompson (01223 476237).

  • City Centre Housegroup

Meets regularly in members' homes on the north side of the City, usually on alternate Wednesdays. Please watch the weekly Church Notices for details of the time and place of our meetings. New members are always welcome to join us. For more information please ring Stephen Falkner on 01223 369221.

  • The Seekers' Group

The Seekers are a group of friends who meet in one another's homes, about once a month, to discuss Christian themes and interests. We are not limited to members of Wesley, and welcome seekers of any viewpoint, often enjoying the company of visitors. The leadership on a given evening rotates amongst group members (though no one is obliged to lead).

Our meetings usually open with a prayer and a Bible reading. We often choose a book or theme for discussion over several meetings. Most recently, we've followed the York Course Can we Build a Better World? which, using William Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery as a starting point, looked at how today's world might be changed for the better.

We are now planning about six sessions of inter-faith dialogue: on 29th October we shall be informing ourselves about Islam, and we hope to meet with a local member of that faith in mid-November. We intend then to continue with various other faiths in the same way.

If you are interested in joining us, for one or two meetings or for longer, contact Margaret Cliff (01223-842351), or John Waldram (01223-245341).

  • Church Bible Class

Not strictly a housegroup since it meets in the Upper Room at Church and is open to all who care to come. It is led by the Minister and a team of lay leaders. Coffee and Tea are served from 19:00 and then from 19:30 - 21:00 each Wednesday we meet for Bible Study and Discussion. Officially we cover about a chapter a week and work consecutively through books of the Bible. In practice we find that the Bible stimulates discussion on a whole variety of contemporary and theological issues which are always interesting. Occasionally we have a visiting speaker or a discussion and study on a specific topic. Further information available from the Minister (01223 352324).

Luncheon Club

There is, at present, one luncheon club organised by the Church for retired people.

  • Friday at 11:00 - usually about 50 people and the food is prepared and cooked in the Church Kitchen by a group of volunteers.

The club exists to promote friendship as well as refreshment. For more information please contact Eve Lamb.

Wesley Walkers

This is an informal group of our members and friends who enjoy a ramble together on Sunday afternoons or Bank Holidays. These are gentle and pleasant usually around the Cambridgeshire countryside, but occasionally they enjoy a more strenuous walk. Annually, they go away for a four day break and enjoy the walking further afield.

Cambridge Fireside

A group of about 50 of us meet on Tuesday evenings at 19:30. The programme is varied and we benefit from the wide range of speakers available to us in Cambridge from all sorts of disciplines and interests. The 'Fireside' originated at a Methodist Church in Cambridge which is now closed. Originally it was intended to meet the needs of servicemen returning from the 1945 war and they met literally around the Church Fireside. The venue has changed and there are now as many women as men, but the old title has remained. All ages are welcome.

MethSoc (Student Society)

Wesley Church was built in 1913 with the intention of being particularly geared to serving the needs of both undergraduates and graduates. We have maintained that tradition through the years. MethSoc is part of a national association of Methodist Students at most British Universities and aims to provide a focus for Methodist (and other) students and encourage and support them in their faith. It is a student-led body with an elected President each term. It is informal and friendly. The main meeting at Wesley is after the morning service in what we call the Octagon Room. Sometimes the meeting will be led by the President or other student. Sometimes there is a visiting speaker. If there has been a visiting Preacher at the morning service then he/she will sometimes be invited to speak. A lunch is provided following the meeting. There are other meetings under the auspices of MethSoc during the week - small groups which meet together for study, prayer and fellowship. There is a prayer breakfast each Friday morning of term in one of the students' rooms and a termly communion breakfast at Wesley. The minister of Wesley acts as Chaplain to MethSoc.

For more information see the Cambridge MethSoc Pages.

38th Cambridge Brownies have been meeting at Wesley Church since their foundation in 2001. We are a group of 24 girls aged between seven and ten, led by a team of student guiders. Like all Brownies we have fun taking part in indoor and outdoor activities, sometimes with members of other Brownie, Guide and Cub groups from the area. Our weekly meetings are action-packed and full of challenges, games and activities, which sometimes count towards badges and have often been suggested by the Brownies themselves. The girls are placed in small, mixed-age teams called Sixes, which helps to foster leadership skills in the older girls and enables new Brownies to mix more easily. If you are interested in joining us, as a Brownie or a leader, please contact the District Commissioner of City NW District c/o Cambs East County HQ, 200A Perne Road, Cambridge, tel. 01223 211377 or email cambseastguides@care4free.net. Social events at Wesley

With as large a congregation as we have at Wesley we need a variety of social activities to get to know one another. These range from New Year Parties, an annual Quiz (highly popular) to moveable feasts when we move from home to home for each of the courses of the meal.
